So Long Ago

So long ago I promised a post about the things to do when you first arrive here in Danville, so here it is!

1. Contact CATV immediately upon knowing where your house is and when your moving date is. It is important to get on their schedule early, otherwise you won't have your internet or cable and phone for possibly a few weeks after you move in.

2. Contact the UGI gas company to notify them of the change in ownership

3. Contact PPL Electric to set up your electricity bills

4. Find a waste services provider. We use Weaver Disposal and they are very good about taking all the trash we put out as long as it is not plant life or chemicals (even took our old toilet)

5. Go out to eat in town! There are tons of yummy places to eat and it will be good to relax before starting out your first week here. If you like wings, LT Evans makes some good wings, vegetarian is great at Brews and Bytes and many people go out for drinks at Mulberry's. Find the time to do something fun and relaxing before getting to far into the new jobs!

Remember that all the phone numbers for the utilities providers can be found on our website under the Resource Center

Have a great week!

Easter Egg Hunt

A lot has happened with the Resident Auxiliary since our last post! We had our elections for the upcoming year and we now have a new President, Secretary, and Treasurer for the group. We are all very excited for a new and exciting year ahead of us.

We also had our annual Easter Egg Hunt for the Ronald McDonald House. We were so excited when we had nearly 20 children come to the Easter Egg hunt with their parents this year. As a group the auxiliary members stuffed the plastic eggs with candy at the April meeting and then we hid them all around the playground for the children to find the Saturday before Easter. We were lucky to have 85 degree weather for the hunt! There may have been a few sunburns before the morning was done.

We are almost to the point of counting down til the first day of orientation for the new interns and fellows. Remember to look for our table at some of the orientation functions. Be sure to introduce yourself to us if we have not met.

The houses on our Real Estate page are going fast! Be sure to schedule time with the homeowners to view any homes you may be interested in before it is too late. Check out the remaining homes on our real estate page of the website.

Our next post will be advice from the group as to what priorities there are for when you first move to Danville. Look for it in May!

Happy Spring!

MD Match

Congratulations to our new MD matches! All the departments were anxiously awaiting the news of our newest additions and we are happy to say excitement is in the air! The Resident Auxiliary is starting the plans for all the welcome activities we will be participating in and hosting this June and are looking forward to seeing you at the welcome events.
In order to help you out even more with the move, we have included the phone numbers for the most popular services (t.v., phone, internet, etc...)in our resources section on the website. Just click on it and open the document to find the numbers. As the moving dates get closer we'll post a blog about the most important things to do prior to moving (such as setting up a date to get your cable and internet hooked up) that might be difficult to schedule with the large influx of new residents to the Danville area.
We hope that everyone is pleased with their match and are looking forward to moving to Central PA! Remember, use our Real Estate listings to find a home to buy or an apartment to rent!

Welcome Warm Weather!

What a fabulous weekend of weather we are having! This weekend we took our first "spring" walk around the neighborhood and around the hospital, it was gorgeous out! We are crossing our fingers for this weather to stay put now. All the tulips and lilies in the neighborhood are starting to come up now, it must mean spring is in the air.
This past auxiliary meeting was great! We were able to discuss the upcoming elections (in April!) and the Easter Egg Hunt that we will be having the first weekend in April. The Easter egg hunt will be at the Ronald McDonald house playground here at Geisinger Medical Center. It is for the resident families as well as the Ronald McDonald families. We are hoping for nice weather for an outdoor hunt but if it is rainy we will move it into the hospital most likely and possibly more kids will be able to join us. We will be stuffing all of the eggs at the April Auxiliary Meeting, as well as having a pizza "party" during the stuffing, so it should be a fun social meeting.

Since we are gearing up for new families getting here, I thought that I would make a short list of the fun things the Moms, Dads and Kiddos can do during the week.
1. Free Library Read Aloud - Thursday's at 10:30
2. Free Music and Movement - Tuesday's at the Library at 10:30
3. MOPS Group
4. Bloomsburg Childrens Museum Classes
5. Auxiliary functions and playdates

The list goes on, this is a just a taste of things to do, free or for a small fee.

We are still anxiously counting down the days to the MD match (only 11 to go)! We can't wait to be able to welcome everyone to Geisinger.

Have a great week!

The Selling Season Has Begun!

Ever since the DO match, the residents have started putting up their houses on our Real Estate page. We are lucky this year to have everything from easy rental properties, to houses for sale anywhere from $130,000 - $600,000! Hopefully there will be a house for every budget.
The Auxiliary email has been getting more action recently as well with incoming residents and fellows asking questions about where is the most convenient place to live, whether or not it is a good or bad idea to live close to the hospital, etc...so here is a list of the 10 best things about living in Danville.

1. Living only blocks from the hospital is AWESOME! A 5 minute walking commute is much easier than a 30 minute especially after a long call night.

2. More time at home to catch up on sleep if you live close to the hospital.

3. Often times the residents who live close to the hospital are one car families. Saving on car insurance, gas, and maintenance (all great things when trying to pay off student loans!)

4. Fun Resident functions that are also family friendly. Such as Geisinger Night at local restaurants; or departmental gatherings, such as the upcoming annual ED Chili Cookoff. Also the family events the Resident Auxiliary puts on, such as Brunch With Santa and the Easter Egg Hunt.

5. Delicious local restaurants make for fun nights out with friends and/or spouses and families.

6. Its easy to hop in the car for a short drive to all the conveniences of a city (target, walmart, mall, craft stores, sporting goods stores.....)

7. Great hiking and mountain biking trails, once the snow melts that is.

8. Its easy to go into New York City or Philadelphia for a long weekend, or avoid going to the city for a long weekend. Your choice.

9. Quite a few ski resorts within an hour or two for winter fun.

10. Easy to make friends since we are all in this residency thing together!

Have a great house hunt and keep checking back for more updates on Auxiliary functions!

Of course, if there is ever any confusion, or if you just need more help, we are only an email away at GeisingerResAux@gmail.com.
And on a final note...
